121.4 kilometers awaited the participants in the junior men’s road race of the World Road Cycling Championships in Belgium, consist eight laps on the designated course around Leuven with four mountain per lap – at the start line with many participants of the August World Cup in Hungary.
The race started at a tremendous pace, the attacks were continuing, and the speed did not decrease after a three-man escape, as the German Luis-Joe Lührs, the Czech Milan Kadlec and the British Joshua Tarling left, who were just strong enough to hold their advantage until the sixth lap.
After catching up with the escape, another group, – five and then eight riders -, broke up. The Norwegian Per Strand Hagenes attacked from here in the final lap, with which the European champion Romain Grégoire from France tried to go, behind them the Danish Simon Dalby, who was also in a great position, fell, thus holding the others up a bit.
However, Hagenes’ strength spoke for himself, so in the end he won the World Championships title over Grégoire and Madis Mihkels, the Estonian who also won two halves-stages during the Hungarian World Cup. Only Zoltán Antal Lepold reached the finish line in 62nd place of the Hungarians.
In addition to Hagenes and Mihkels, the Austrian Alexander Hajek finished fifth, but among the cyclists he met at the Hungarian race, the Estonian Romet Pajur, the American Colby Simmons and the Spanish Ivan Romeo also made it into the top twenty.
