The best of this age group visited Hungary for the first time in the 2020 season as a huge success in sports diplomacy, in connection with which Hungary was able to host another world competition in the history of the sport after almost a hundred years – moreover, was the only youth World Cup race to be held, and this was also welcomed by the leadership of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
Dr. Tünde Szabó, Secretary of State for Sport, emphasized that the International Federation could not easily give the right to organize this competition, and that the organizers had already proved their readiness to hold such a competition with last year’s Visegrad 4 Juniors. required for an international sporting event. “In Hungary, cycling is one of the sixteen major sports, and with the help of sports competitions, youth education and sports tourism are also developing,” she added.
In the colors of the twenty teams, we can welcome athletes from twenty-one nations in Hungary, including one or two riders who, despite their young age, already have a signed contract to recruit a club that is the elite of the sport – perhaps the biggest star of the race is the Norwegian Per Strand Hagenes.
Of course, a competition of this caliber also offers a lot of advantages for domestic cycling, because fortunately the young people already proved last year that they are competing with the world leader. In addition to the national team, the Lotus Regional Team from Pécs will also start this year.
Dr. Péter Princzinger, President of the Hungarian Cycling Association, also emphasized the importance of the competition for Hungarian cyclists: „The competition also provides a great opportunity for the Hungarian participants, who will be numbered in the peloton by twelve, ”he said.
According to the present position in the 2021 season, Hungary can host the opening of the three-round series between 20 and 22 August. The race starts with a 3.8-kilometer prologue in Nyíregyháza, and then the next day there will be two half-stages: a 89.9-kilometer rad race in the morning around Vásárosnamény, and a 41.2-kilometer road race in the afternoon around Ibrány.
