The 2020 season was a huge sporting diplomatic success, with the best of the age group visiting Hungary for the first time in almost a century to host a world championship in the history of the sport – and it was exemplary that, despite the adverse conditions of the coronavirus situation, the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County event was the only Youth Nations’ Cup race to be held, and this was positively received by the Union Cycliste International (UCI).
The primary aim of the event was to lay the foundations for success in the years to come with the help of the organisers, their sponsors and partners, and the progress made was reflected in the quality of the peloton for 2021, which will be held a year later. The teams coming to our country now include riders who, despite their youth, have signed contracts with some of the sport’s elite clubs.
Of course, a competition of this calibre also gives the sport of cycling in Hungary a lot of advantages, as Hungarian youngsters have fortunately already proved in the last two years that they are in competition with the world’s best. In addition to the national team, this year the Kecskemét MKB Cycling Team will also be competing.
In the 2022 season, Hungary will host the ninth stop of the ten-round series between 17 and 19 August. The race will start with a 3.8-kilometre prologue in Nyíregyháza, followed by a 111.6-kilometre field stage between the county seat and Ibrány the next day. On the final day, the caravan will cycle 117.4 kilometres between Vásárosnamény and Nyíregyháza.
